Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author

Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author

Zora Marie, author of Free of Asenten (Zelia the Phoenix of Hope Book 1), might be new to the author scene but she definitely takes off with a bang! As many authors compete against one another, Zora shares a unique perspective. She chooses to embrace other authors believing that authors stand a better chance together than apart. I found myself compelled to find out more about Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author. I trust you will find her diversity and outlook as compelling as I do!

What does writing do for you?

Writing has done quite a few things for me. It’s given me a place to spill my guts and let my imagination run wild. Since I’ve been living with my family down south it has given me someplace to direct my pent up social energy. I suppose I should go out and make friends, but I’m a bit of an introvert. Even doing things like this can be a feat in of itself, but I’m getting better at it.

What inspires your writing?

Now, as far as what inspires my writing, that’s a whole other story. I have a love of Norse and Greek mythology, among a long list of others, and that definitely shows in my writing. While I love the original myths, I do have a little brother so I’ve been sure to write in a way that my work is age appropriate for children of young ages while also being deep enough to be an engaging read for the older generations.

Another thing that you’ll notice about my writing is that my other hobbies, current and past, have a tendency to bleed into my writing. I won’t go into too much detail as I could be here for a while if I did, but I have experience tanning hides, processing my own food, making my own yarn, and a ton of other things that has given me a unique perspective about many things that most people my age haven’t the slightest perception of how it works.

Why did you take to writing?

Quite skimpily put, the story of Zelia had been bugging me for years. Finally, it demanded to be put down on paper.  I already had most of the world built and several of the characters fleshed out. In February I may have only started putting her world on paper.

I really didn’t have time to write, I made time. Cutting all television and most movie watching gave me the time to write between college assignments.  I love writing and would love to do it for a living, but I rather choose to write a compelling story than write to pay my bills.

How does writing help you?

Funny that you should ask. I’ve actually always been utterly horrible at spelling and grammar. However, as I’ve written and edited my work multiple times my spelling and grammar has improved. Not only that, but I’ve noticed that my research paper writing abilities have improved. Which is good, seeing as how I’ve been writing a lot of them this summer.

Zora Marie Inspirational quote - Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author

Do you have days when you can’t write?

Certainly, I have actually just hit a wall with the first draft of book 3. I know where the story is going but I’m not sure how it’s going to get there. The characters are taking their sweet time decided where they want to go next.

What did you do to overcome these days?

I’ve found that editing other parts of the work or even earlier books in the series to be extremely helpful. It helps me get back into the character’s heads and stirs the kettle up a bit. If that doesn’t work I’ll step back and read a book. I have a few books on my shelf that are waiting to be read and a few works of Indy authors that are on my wish list.

When I read I delve into another author’s world and learn their writing style and when I come out I can look at my own work with a whole new light. Sometimes it’s almost as if I received an upgrade. When I learn something new or find something in someone else’s writing that bothers me, it opens my eyes to all kinds of things.

What inspires you?

As of late, the most inspiring thing has been the willingness of authors to help each other. I know that I would not be where I am now if it weren’t for the advice and encouragement of both authors I have met in person and those I have met through social media. It’s my interactions with these people that make me want to strive to be a better person, one that is there and willing to lend a helping hand.

3 Simple Ideas to Master the Skill of Active Voice.

If you wish to keep your readers actively engaged in your article, you will need these 3 simple ideas to master the skill of active voice. I am not referring to you actively typing away at your computer,  I am referring to you using active voice while writing your article. It is essential to recognize when to remain in the active voice and when the passive voice is acceptable.

3 Simple Ideas to Master the Skill of Active Voice.

I have vivid memories of my very German teacher trying to teach the difference between active and passive voices in English lesson. It was an excruciatingly long lesson for her and for us children.

Writing in active voice may at first seem rather difficult to master, especially when writing copy for websites. This needn’t be the case, as you use active voice daily. Remember, unchecked passive voice can destroy your viewers interest and thereby ruin your rankings too.

3 Simple Ideas to master the skill of active writing
3 Simple Ideas to master the skill of active writing.

3 Simple Ideas to Master the Skill of Active Voice.

Identifying the Passive Voice.

Welcome to a trip down memory lane 🙂 English 101 commencing now.

Active Voice is when your sentence construction consists of a Subject, then a verb, and then followed by the object.

“Mark plays games.”

The sentence flows and sounds correct. Immediately one knows who is the subject, what the action is, and what it involves.

Passive would then look like this.

“The games are played by Mark”.

You can immediately  see that this is somewhat backwards. The sentence above shows an example of the double-verb. “Are played” identifies the passive voice in the example above. This is a rather simple example. More often our sentences are a tad longer and that opens the door wide-open to passive voice.

Passive Voice sentences often give the reader the impression that the writer has somehow dwindled off… *Yawn*

The paragliding sites in the Garden Route, South Africa, are frequented by visiting German paragliding pilots.

Other than that example being true, it almost seems active, but take another look. You can immediately identify this sentence as passive because of the double verb.

However, the readability is horrendous. It seems as if I have forgotten the point. Is the sentence about the flight sites? Or about the German pilots? The sentence is pretty much nonsensical. Passive Voice sentences give the reader the impression that the writer has somehow dwindled off… *Yawn*

An active voice sentence would in fact make a perfect newspaper headline!

Now take a look at the active counterpart of this sentence:

German paragliding pilots frequent the Garden Route paragliding sites in South Africa.

Not only does the second example seem more direct and to the point, but it feels more active too.  An active voice sentence would in fact make a perfect newspaper headline!

3 Simple Ideas to Master the Skill of Active Voice. 3 Step Viral Marketing: 3 Effective Ways to Drive Traffic!

When to use Passive Voice.

So active voice may be great for NEWSPAPER headlines, however  passive voice is great for Website titles because it emphasizes the action being taken.

Active voice is best for most Web content, but using passive voice can let you front-load important keywords in headings, blurbs, and lead sentences. This enhances scannability and thus SEO effectiveness. – JAKOB NIELSEN

When to use passive voice - 3 Simple Ideas to Master the Skill of Active Voice.
When to use passive voice

Bear in mind that everything, including passive voice, has it’s time and place. Think of this:

Unknown Entity

My car was stolen from the parking lot.

I don’t know who did it and therefore passive voice is useful.

Unimportant Entity

Security of the parking lot will be increased.

It is not important to know who will be increasing the security, so once again the passive voice works well.

General Entity

Trespassers will be prosecuted.

Here again you can see that it is of no importance  who exactly the subject is referring to. “The Magistrates Court will prosecute trespassers” just sounds weird.

2 Ideas to help you check for Passive Voice.

Using Word.
