#1 Apex Magazine

Apex Magazine publishes Fantasy, Horror, and Science Fiction.  Visit their website to get a gist of the types of stories that they accept for publication.

Payment: $0.06  a word up to 7,500, plus an extra one cent per word per podcast. Read More.

#2 Asimov’s

Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine is looking for “character oriented” stories, where the characters, rather than the science, provide the main focus for the reader’s interest.  Sci-Fi dominates the fiction published in Asimov’s, but they do also publish borderline fantasy, slipstream, and surreal fiction.

Payment:

  • 8-10 cents per word for short stories up to 7,500 words,
  • 8 cents for each word over 7,500.
  • Asimov’s seldom purchases stories shorter than 1,000 words or longer than 20,000 words, and don’t serialize novels.
  • They pay $1 a line for poetry, which should not exceed 40 lines. Read More.

CICADA is a YA lit/comics magazine fascinated with the lyric and strange and committed to work that speaks to teens’ truths. We publish poetry, realistic and genre fiction, essay, and comics by adults and teens. (We are also inordinately fond of Viking jokes.) Their readers are smart and curious; they do invite submissions but they are not required to engage young adult themes. CICADA does not distribute theme lists for upcoming issues.

Furthermore, only send full manuscripts up to 25,000 words as they do not accept queries, and make a point of reading their magazine before submitting.

One Story is seeking literary fiction. They do only accept stories between 3,000 and 8,000 words of any style and on any subject as long as they are good. They are looking for stories that leave readers feeling satisfied and that are strong enough to stand alone.
