4 Deorbital

Another Twitter ad 🙂 I checked it out for you.

If you’re reading this hopefully you already know what we’re about. If you don’t, check out the quick rundown my co-editor Dante Douglas wrote. Otherwise, I’m here to clarify what we’re looking for from our writers and the nitty gritty of publishing and payment.

We’re a publication that puts lesser known voices first. This means people of marginalized identities, and younger writers who maybe have less experience. If you know any promising writers feel free to let them know about us as well, and if they’re comfortable with it let us know so we can get in touch with them.

We don’t do news, writing focused on the games industry, or smaller articles that you might find on a typical games site. If you want to do top ten lists or write about why pre-orders are bad for the industry there are other places for that.

Articles should be personal and subjective. They can be stories about games, critical analysis, or writing that contextualizes games within other media or larger society. More than anything it should be about a subject that you care about personally, and can show others why they should as well. Pitch Here or  Read More.

5 Five Thirty Eight

The personal finance columnist will write a regular feature on topics such as saving, investing, managing debt and paying for college (schedule and frequency to be determined). We’re looking for someone who can think creatively about what a personal finance column can be; we don’t want every column to be a twist on, “Invest in low-fee index funds.” This column will target a broad audience, so an ability to connect with readers who aren’t directly affected by the subject being discussed is essential. This is a freelance, not a staff, position. Apply or Read More.

6 Freedom Crossroads

The Freedom Crossroads Team is a group of talented writers and editors dedicated to providing our readers with relevant news and insightful opinion from the world of faith and politics. If you’re passionate about issues of faith, politics, and culture, consider joining our team!

We’re looking for people who want to write about faith, politics, and culture – and how those worlds collide. A lot of conservative news sites cover everything. Freedom Crossroads is different. We cater to a faith-based audience, and we focus on specific issues. If you want a better idea of what we cover, feel free to look around the site. Ask Conrad, Apply or Read More.

7 Greene Street

8 HerStories

We’re thrilled to announce our latest HerStories Project addition: a new column called HerStories Voices. Here we’ll publish two essays per month. We’re looking for the kind of writing that moves us, amazes us, and makes us wish that we had written it ourselves. As always, we want to highlight the best of women’s voices and show the uniqueness and commonalities of women’s experiences.

We are continuing with our monthly themes this year. Our September theme is FRIENDSHIP, stay tuned for the rest of our fall themes!

Email your essay in the body to herstoriesvoices@gmail.com. No attachments, please. Include a short bio and your social media links. Read More or Submit.

ICFJ is seeking short-term consultants for its “Meeting the Challenge: Strengthening societies and governance through journalism and citizen engagement” project.

Based off a previous, similar project, ICFJ aims to strengthen investigative reporting and transparency in nine target countries in Latin America (Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama). Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author

Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author

Zora Marie, author of Free of Asenten (Zelia the Phoenix of Hope Book 1), might be new to the author scene but she definitely takes off with a bang! As many authors compete against one another, Zora shares a unique perspective. She chooses to embrace other authors believing that authors stand a better chance together than apart. I found myself compelled to find out more about Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author. I trust you will find her diversity and outlook as compelling as I do!

Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing AuthorZora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author

What does writing do for you?

Writing has done quite a few things for me. It’s given me a place to spill my guts and let my imagination run wild. Since I’ve been living with my family down south it has given me someplace to direct my pent up social energy. I suppose I should go out and make friends, but I’m a bit of an introvert. Even doing things like this can be a feat in of itself, but I’m getting better at it.

What inspires your writing?

Now, as far as what inspires my writing, that’s a whole other story. I have a love of Norse and Greek mythology, among a long list of others, and that definitely shows in my writing. While I love the original myths, I do have a little brother so I’ve been sure to write in a way that my work is age appropriate for children of young ages while also being deep enough to be an engaging read for the older generations.

Another thing that you’ll notice about my writing is that my other hobbies, current and past, have a tendency to bleed into my writing. I won’t go into too much detail as I could be here for a while if I did, but I have experience tanning hides, processing my own food, making my own yarn, and a ton of other things that has given me a unique perspective about many things that most people my age haven’t the slightest perception of how it works.

Why did you take to writing?

Quite skimpily put, the story of Zelia had been bugging me for years. Finally, it demanded to be put down on paper.  I already had most of the world built and several of the characters fleshed out. In February I may have only started putting her world on paper.

I really didn’t have time to write, I made time. Cutting all television and most movie watching gave me the time to write between college assignments.  I love writing and would love to do it for a living, but I rather choose to write a compelling story than write to pay my bills.

How does writing help you?

Funny that you should ask. I’ve actually always been utterly horrible at spelling and grammar. However, as I’ve written and edited my work multiple times my spelling and grammar has improved. Not only that, but I’ve noticed that my research paper writing abilities have improved. Which is good, seeing as how I’ve been writing a lot of them this summer.

Zora Marie Inspirational quote - Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author

Do you have days when you can’t write?

Certainly, I have actually just hit a wall with the first draft of book 3. I know where the story is going but I’m not sure how it’s going to get there. The characters are taking their sweet time decided where they want to go next.

What did you do to overcome these days?

I’ve found that editing other parts of the work or even earlier books in the series to be extremely helpful. It helps me get back into the character’s heads and stirs the kettle up a bit. If that doesn’t work I’ll step back and read a book. I have a few books on my shelf that are waiting to be read and a few works of Indy authors that are on my wish list.

When I read I delve into another author’s world and learn their writing style and when I come out I can look at my own work with a whole new light. Sometimes it’s almost as if I received an upgrade. When I learn something new or find something in someone else’s writing that bothers me, it opens my eyes to all kinds of things.

What inspires you?

As of late, the most inspiring thing has been the willingness of authors to help each other. I know that I would not be where I am now if it weren’t for the advice and encouragement of both authors I have met in person and those I have met through social media. It’s my interactions with these people that make me want to strive to be a better person, one that is there and willing to lend a helping hand.
