Black Rabbit

Issue No. One is now open for submissions with the deadline being 31 January 2017!

Submit your work to blackrabbit.submissions@gmail.com as an attachment.

Fiction:

In Issue No. One we will be publishing one fiction piece 900 words or fewer. Genre and content guidelines are loose, though our fiction editor is inclined to take work with a literary tone more seriously than work without it. Creativity and experimentation are encouraged in all cases. Publication comes with a $25 payment.

Non-Fiction:

Issue No. One will also include one persuasive or personal essay 250 words or fewer. Engaging, intelligent, and appropriately relaxed tone is encouraged; think of the tone of David Foster Wallace’s nonfiction. Essays should express a point of view, be able to defend it, and exhibit the personality and artistry of their author, all within around one page. Creativity and flexibility are encouraged, though the word limit is hard. Publication comes with a $25 payment.

Audio:

Should Black Rabbit get competent, creative, intriguing submissions in this extremely specific category Issue No. One will feature one non-musical abstract sound clip under or around 90 seconds long. Sound collage, dramatic scenes, monologue, pseudo-music, which is left up to artists to define but should not rely too heavily on the mechanics and conventions of true music as defined by the editors, and indeed any other audio recording within the time guidelines set out above are all welcome. The editors are partial to weird and innovative works. Publication comes with a $25 payment.

Visual Arts:

Issue No. One will feature one work of abstract expressionist painting, drawing, or collage. The term ‘abstract expressionism’ is meant to be interpreted loosely, but taken seriously. Directly representative images should be avoided, or if included should be done so with intention and grace afforded to the constraints of genre noted above. Publication comes with a $25 payment. Submit with a brief (1-3 sentence) statement describing where and when you painted, drew, or collaged this piece, and, if there is a clear inspiration for or theme to it, what that might be.

Artists and authors should feel free, and indeed are encouraged, to make simultaneous submissions, although Black Rabbit asks that you notify our staff immediately if such submissions should be accepted elsewhere.

Artists and authors are encouraged to submit to every open category of submissions that they have work within the guidelines of, though they are limited to one piece in each category.

Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author

Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author

Zora Marie, author of Free of Asenten (Zelia the Phoenix of Hope Book 1), might be new to the author scene but she definitely takes off with a bang! As many authors compete against one another, Zora shares a unique perspective. She chooses to embrace other authors believing that authors stand a better chance together than apart. I found myself compelled to find out more about Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author. I trust you will find her diversity and outlook as compelling as I do!

What does writing do for you?

Writing has done quite a few things for me. It’s given me a place to spill my guts and let my imagination run wild. Since I’ve been living with my family down south it has given me someplace to direct my pent up social energy. I suppose I should go out and make friends, but I’m a bit of an introvert. Even doing things like this can be a feat in of itself, but I’m getting better at it.

What inspires your writing?

Now, as far as what inspires my writing, that’s a whole other story. I have a love of Norse and Greek mythology, among a long list of others, and that definitely shows in my writing. While I love the original myths, I do have a little brother so I’ve been sure to write in a way that my work is age appropriate for children of young ages while also being deep enough to be an engaging read for the older generations.

Another thing that you’ll notice about my writing is that my other hobbies, current and past, have a tendency to bleed into my writing. I won’t go into too much detail as I could be here for a while if I did, but I have experience tanning hides, processing my own food, making my own yarn, and a ton of other things that has given me a unique perspective about many things that most people my age haven’t the slightest perception of how it works.

Why did you take to writing?

Quite skimpily put, the story of Zelia had been bugging me for years. Finally, it demanded to be put down on paper.  I already had most of the world built and several of the characters fleshed out. In February I may have only started putting her world on paper.

I really didn’t have time to write, I made time. Cutting all television and most movie watching gave me the time to write between college assignments.  I love writing and would love to do it for a living, but I rather choose to write a compelling story than write to pay my bills.

How does writing help you?

Funny that you should ask. I’ve actually always been utterly horrible at spelling and grammar. However, as I’ve written and edited my work multiple times my spelling and grammar has improved. Not only that, but I’ve noticed that my research paper writing abilities have improved. Which is good, seeing as how I’ve been writing a lot of them this summer.

Zora Marie Inspirational quote - Zora Marie, The Author-Embracing Author

Do you have days when you can’t write?

Certainly, I have actually just hit a wall with the first draft of book 3. I know where the story is going but I’m not sure how it’s going to get there. The characters are taking their sweet time decided where they want to go next.

What did you do to overcome these days?

I’ve found that editing other parts of the work or even earlier books in the series to be extremely helpful. It helps me get back into the character’s heads and stirs the kettle up a bit. If that doesn’t work I’ll step back and read a book. I have a few books on my shelf that are waiting to be read and a few works of Indy authors that are on my wish list.

When I read I delve into another author’s world and learn their writing style and when I come out I can look at my own work with a whole new light. Sometimes it’s almost as if I received an upgrade. When I learn something new or find something in someone else’s writing that bothers me, it opens my eyes to all kinds of things.

What inspires you?

As of late, the most inspiring thing has been the willingness of authors to help each other. I know that I would not be where I am now if it weren’t for the advice and encouragement of both authors I have met in person and those I have met through social media. It’s my interactions with these people that make me want to strive to be a better person, one that is there and willing to lend a helping hand.
